>"A Big Rain"

>When I was growing up in Nashville, I would call my grandmother in Pearl, Mississippi and she would inevitably tell me about the weather. She would say “Honey, we had a BIG RAIN here yesterday.” She had a way of speaking that was like none other I have ever encountered. Everything thing she reported seemed bigger than life to me, even the weather. She was a very religious person and held true to her Methodist faith all her life. She was fiercely opposed to such vices as card playing and dancing. She said her daddy told her such things “only lead to ruination”. I took a pack of playing cards with me to her house one summer to help pass the time with a game or two of “go fish” with my grandpa. The minute she spied them, she went into a 20 tirade about how if I played cards I would surely end up in the penitentiary by the time I reached adulthood. She confiscated the cards, never to be seen again.

Yesterday’s storm in Helena Alabama yielded quite a bit of rain for our flowers and I am sure she would have reported to me a ” BIG RAIN” here yesterday.
