We recently purchased a few “exhibition” hybrid tea roses for our garden. Not that I am a huge gung ho competitive person who just has to make the court of honor at every show, but I would like an opportunity to demonstrate that an amateur like myself can produce award winning blooms. It is important to me that people know that you do not have to be a professional gardener to have a garden of marvelous roses!
The Mariln Wellan hybrid tea is an exceptional rose. It is a cross of two other exhibition roses; “Veterans Honor” and “Hot Princess”. The official coloring of this rose is a “medium red”, I have seen it look more pink in cooler weather and a little more red in the warmer weather.
This rose is the namesake of a past President of the American Rose Society. Quoting from Carolyn Parker’s “Rosenotes
” web site:
“Marilyn Wellan is the immediate Past President of the American Rose Society. She is only the second woman to serve in that position in the 116-year history of the organization. Among her many accomplishments, she helped bring the ARS and the Heritage Rose groups together to jointly embrace the mission of the protection, preservation and promotion of heritage roses. She lives and gardens in Louisiana and has the distinct honor of being the namesake of a spectacular rose.”
I am excited to have rose in my garden and look forward to watching it grow and show in the years to come.
