This is the first warm sunny day in Birmingham in many weeks! It was a great opportunity for me to work in the garden. The winter rain, cold and wind tend to create an atmosphere just right for the growth of mold and fungus, which can spell disaster in the rose garden. To help combat this problem, I collect as many fallen rose leaves as can be collected. I also remove any dead leaves from the canes as I go. They seem to be the main culprit when it comes to disease. Even though, I have sprayed with dormant spray, I want to be sure that the garden gets off to a disease free start.
It won’t be long until we can prune (early March in Alabama) and look forward to seeing beautiful disease free shrubs in the garden again. Happy Saturday to all!
