Christopher R. VanCleave – America’s Favorite Rose Gardener
Nicknamed "The Redneck Rosarian”, Chris VanCleave is passionate about gardening and growing roses. He is an active member of the Birmingham chapter of the American Rose Society, serving two terms as President. In 2007, he created the Rose Chat Podcast which has reached over a half a million listeners with news and information on growing on growing the world’s most beloved flower, the rose.
He was a contributor to the 2015 Southern Living Gardening Book, has appeared on P. Allen Smith’s Garden Home television show and was featured in the June 2015 issue of Southern Living Magazine. Locally, Chris serves as Chairman of the Helena Alabama Beautification Board where he has spearheaded efforts to create a sustainable landscape in one of the top one hundred places to live in the United States.
His writing is seen at About.com and on his popular website; RedneckRosarian.com, where he chronicles his gardening adventures and explores an intrinsic mix of life, faith and gardening.

Beautiful! Your ‘Lavaglut’ isn’t nearly as dark as mine! Mine is a very dark red. ‘Veteran’s Honor’ is sure pretty!

Your roses look so wonderful Chris. The Hot Lava is a pretty one. My Iceberg got blackspot after our silly wet spring. So disappointing. Last year it was my favorite rose.

I just love the dew or the rain on your roses…… water droplets are at their best when sitting on a rose petal…..and rose petals are at their best when they’ve got a drop of two dew on them…..Just saying…..

wow…these are just incredible! Your photos are perfect with the dew or water drops on the plants…they are just so pretty! do you frame a lot of your photos?
do you dry any of these blooms to make arrangements for decorative touches around home? I know I would…I’d probably have one or two or more of each!

Glenda, thanks so much for your kind words. Yes, I take lots of photos and have some framed in our home. Have never tried to dry them, but have always wanted to try it. Just need to get the technique down…. There are quite a few varieties of roses that can withstand the Alberta winters. Would be glad to get you a list together. Have a friend who lives in Toronto and has quite a number of roses growing on his farm. He too could make some good rose suggestions for your garden.
