The Gift of Fellowship

If I could encourage readers of this blog to do one thing this Christmas it would be to fellowship with those around you. The term fellowship brings to mind thoughts of friends and family and those we love coming together to enjoy one another’s company at Christmas. From days of old, people gather together for the holidays even if at no other time of the year. We decorate our homes and put out goodies for people to enjoy. For some, its a welcome respite from a year of worry and strife.

Each year, we look for decorations that are fresh, versatile and evoke a sense of the holiday cheer. This year is no different.

I have selected Fellowship House a local Birmingham program that since 1965 has provided substance abuse recovery programs designed to serve the special needs of individual who suffer from alcoholism, drug addiction and co-occurring disorders.

People who suffer from mental illness often turn to substance abuse to ease their pain. This complicates their illness and often leaves them in a never ending cycle of abuse. Fellowship House is the only program in the state of Alabama that offers treatment for this dual diagnosis and has had wonderful success treating individuals who enter the program. I have visited there on several occasions and their dining hall could surely use greenery from this collection to brighten spirits this holiday season.

During the summer, no one visits our garden and leaves without a rose. In winter, no one leaves without a cup of tea and some goodies and if possible share a meal with us.

This Mantle Piece also makes an excellent centerpiece for our holiday table. It’s low, so you can see folks across the table!
