Rose Companions

Yes! Roses love friends! Unless you are growing roses in a formal setting, you’re probably going to want to add some companion plants along the way.  This list is compiled from several sources including what is growing alongside the roses in my garden.
Take a chance. Plant a few. You’ll be glad you did!

Thank you, some of these will grow nicely here in the desert although most are annuals here. My goal is a perenial garden that blooms cycle lasts throughout the year but, I admit…I love annuals and won’t stop planting them for that pop of color.

Great suggestions! Clematis are my favorite companions.

    • We now have three planted now. what are your favorite varieties/colors?

I have discovered two evergreen clematis since living here. I have ‘Snowdrift’ and ‘Apple ? Blossom’ covering a chain link fence behind some roses. I really hate the look of the chain link, but just today I noticed that it did keep hungry deer away, as expected. How did I figure that out? They were near, pruning only the canes sticking out of the fence!

I have seen beautiful purple clematis ‘President’ climbing near delicate pink Austin roses. That combo takes your breath away 🙂
